Cancer Pain Management

What increases the trauma due to cancer is the pain that accompanies it in certain cases. Patients might feel dull aches, burning sensations, or an excruciating crippling pain that is impossible to cope up with. The pain might be caused by cancer itself as it invades the surrounding tissues and bones thereby putting pressure on the nerves. It is also possible that the cancerous tumors might secrete pain-causing chemicals thereby doing nerve damage. However, cancer treatment methods like radiation, surgery, or chemotherapy can also be the reason for the pain caused.

Often people believe that there is no way to get over this painful condition which is not true. At Dunes Pain Clinic, our physicians and the medical expert's teamwork in tandem with oncologists of our patients to reduce the pain and discomfort being experienced by them.

Symptoms of Cancer Pain

Cancer pain symptoms might vary as per the diagnosis and the treatment that is being administered to the patient. The pain might be dull or very sharp; burning is also experienced. The duration and intensity of the pain can also vary and can be intermittent or persisting; mild or even severe. The pain can originate in the muscles, joints, head, or abdomen – basically, any body part that is getting affected by the condition. You might also feel dizzy or nauseous due to cancer.

If the pain becomes severe and the symptoms do not subside, it becomes of utmost importance for you to get examined by your pain management expert, oncologist, or any medical expert.

The Various Treatments for Cancer Pain

There are various treatments, both interventional and non-interventional, that are administered to reduce cancer pain. They can include medications, injections, or alternative treatment methods to combat the discomfort.

  • Over-the-counter medication: This includes drugs like aspirin and ibuprofen which aid in reducing the pain.

  • Weak and Strong Opioids: Opium-derived weak opioids like codeine and strong opioids like morphine are administered to tackle cancer pain. There can be side-effects of taking opioids like nausea, dizziness, or vomiting. The fear of addiction can be ruled out as they are consumed for pain relief in controlled amounts. There are various newly developed opioids that are present in the market which can be consumed safely as per prescription.

  • Interventional treatments: These include invasive procedures like nerve blocks, steroid injections, or radiofrequency ablation to block the nerves that are responsible for causing the pain. These procedures are not very complicated and patients are usually discharged quickly from the clinic.

  • Alternative Treatments: Therapies like acupuncture, acupressure, massages, or meditation are also used to help in managing cancer pain. These therapies aim to relax the body and mind so as to alleviate the individual psychologically.
